Here’s Your Crown, King Nothing

You have it all figured out.  You’ve done exactly what you were told.  You’re sober and loving life, but you still feel the need to make a sarcastic and condescending comment towards anyone who even suggests that your way is not for them.  It worked for you so it must the only solution that exists.  I mean, everyone is just like you and you’re not unique in any way so they must be doing something wrong.  If they did everything by “the book” and just listened like they didn’t have a mind of their own they would stay sober too, right?

This Naked Mind?  SMART Recovery?  Refuge Recovery?  Celebrate Recovery?  Therapy?  It’s all bullshit, right?  Those methods will never last.  They can’t possibly product long-term sobriety, can they?

Now that I have your attention with sarcasm and condescension, I can make my point.  These programs can and do work.  I see it working every day in my advocacy.  Everyone is unique and each person needs to find their own path to recovery and what works for them.  In fact, they are entitled to think on their own.  God made them unique.  They were given their own brain and body just so they could form their own thoughts and do what they want.

I find it ironic when those who follow the 12-steps, one of which is to help their fellow addict, are so selfish with the process of recovery.  Your failure to recognize the struggle of overcoming of addiction and to simplify it into the obedience of following steps is hypocritical.  You are supposed to be a changed person who does not take the inventory of others, but here you are gloriously telling people what to do and how to do it.

Some people do need to be told what to do and how to do it.  Clear-cut rules and directions work best for them.  Others like to think on their own and need to feel empowered in their choices.  Neither view is right or wrong.  What is wrong is telling people they are doing it wrong.  I was recently told that I am killing people by telling them they have a choice in recovery and can do it their own way.  Well, I believe that you are killing people by telling them that there is only one way to recover and if they aren’t getting it by doing it that way they are failing.

If a 12-step program works for you, that is fantastic!  But, if another approach works better for you, that is fantastic too!  If you are doing anything to try to fix a problem in your life you are a fucking champion.  So many people do nothing.  So many people are afraid to make a change.  People die every day from addiction.  The will to live is a beautiful thing.  The will to live happily and free is some next level shit.  Taking the time and effort to live a better life deserves to be celebrated in a culture that celebrates poisoning itself for fun.  If you step forward and OWN your sobriety you will always be celebrated by me, regardless of how you choose to go about it.
